About Sixteen
Sixteen is an independent cultural platform based in Paris, dedicated to photography and cinema as forms of memory.
Founded in 2016, Sixteen works from the belief that images are not simply visual objects or fleeting moments, but time capsules—records of lived experience that carry emotional, political, and historical meaning across generations. In an era defined by speed, circulation, and constant production, Sixteen is committed to slowing down the encounter with images, placing them in context, and allowing them to endure.
Photography and cinema sit at the core of Sixteen’s practice because they are the mediums through which culture most powerfully inscribes time. Images do not disappear when they are made; they accumulate meaning through preservation, sequencing, and re-engagement. Sixteen exists to create the structures in which this process can happen.
Publishing
At the heart of Sixteen is Sixteen Magazine, a biannual printed publication devoted entirely to images. Each volume is curated around a central theme and conceived as a durable object—designed to be revisited rather than consumed once.
The magazine places contemporary work alongside historical references, creating dialogues across time rather than isolating the present. Publishing, for Sixteen, is a space for thought, rhythm, and visual continuity.
In parallel, Sixteen develops books, essays, and long-form editorial projects that expand critical reflection around photography and cinema.
The Sixteen Photography Collection
The Sixteen Photography Collection is a growing archive of photographic works by emerging and established artists. The collection is built with a long-term perspective, prioritizing works that engage with time, place, and lived experience.
Collecting is not approached as accumulation, but as cultural responsibility. The collection forms a material foundation for exhibitions, research, and future public access, and is part of a broader ambition toward the creation of a Sixteen Photography Center.
Sixteen Film Institute
Cinema is an essential extension of Sixteen’s engagement with images and time. Through the Sixteen Film Institute, we curate film screenings, installations, and conversations that bring cinema into dialogue with photography, literature, and contemporary culture.
The Film Institute focuses on independent, essayistic, and archival works, and treats cinema as a collective experience—one that unfolds in duration and invites shared attention rather than passive consumption.
Public Programs and Discourse
Beyond publishing and collecting, Sixteen develops exhibitions, screenings, and live conversations that activate images in public space. These programs are conceived as moments of encounter between artists, filmmakers, writers, and audiences.
Discourse within Sixteen is intentionally limited and precise. We favour focused conversations over panels, depth over quantity, and long-term reflection over commentary.
